MTHFR Variants: Evolutionary Adaptations, Not Genetic Mistakes

  • Regional advantage: The well-known MTHFR C677T variant is more common in East Asia, Latin America, and Southern Europe. The frequency of this variant in certain areas suggests it provided a survival benefit based on diet, climate, or environment.

Why MTHFR Variants Can Feel More Problematic Today

Our modern environment is very different from the one our ancestors lived in. Certain stressors can put more pressure on people with MTHFR variants, including:

  • High exposure to chemicals, plastics, and medications
  • Nutrient-depleted soil and heavily processed food
  • Chronic stress
  • Widespread use of synthetic folic acid, which is harder for those with MTHFR variants to process

These factors can overwhelm the body’s ability to adapt, sometimes leading to fatigue, anxiety, hormone imbalance, and other health struggles.
